New Mexico Trout Fishing

Chama River - Near Tierra Amarilla

New Mexico is home to some of the finest trout fishing anywhere in the United States. The Chama river is one of a number of streams flowing through the state that is full of native brown trout, rainbows and even holds a small quantity of cutthroat trout. The video above was taken approximately 1 mile from El Vado Lake Dam. Fishing is solid from the dam, down river for quite a few miles. My favorite times to fish are early April and September through October.

If you are interested in Fishing the river, my suggestion to you would be to contact David Cooper, owner of Coopers El Vado Ranch (http://www.elvado.com/). David has a number of rustic cabins that he rents out for a very reasonable price and a really nice strecth of river runs directly through the ranch. Interestingly enough, while my wife, parents and I were staying at the ranch a week ago, New Mexico Magazine also happened to be there photographing the river and doing an article on fly fishing, a local fishing guide and Coopers Ranch. We are subscribers to the magazine and will be excited to see how the article turns out.
